Badger night visit

The badgers were walking around our house last night.
Their favorite place is the blueberry grove, where they have dug themselves latrines…
There must be several of them, given the amount of fertilizer they leave.
In fact, the only time I saw them, around 11pm, there were three of them.

This blueberry patch really appeals to the badgers. They come back regularly.
They dig holes, always several, then fill them conscientiously, with precision.
It seems that they come back several times, to fill in the gaps.
Thanks for the nitrogen, potash, phosphorus and all that good stuff.

They also dig a lot of holes everywhere, it’s in their nature. Sometimes it’s annoying when you trip over it in the middle of the path, but most of the time it digs under the mandarin tree mulch, not very deep.

Searching for larvae or the next latrine?

The only serious damage they have done, so far, was last June on young cherry trees.
They had stripped them of all their leaves, without touching the other nearby trees. Systematic, they leave nothing, sometimes they had to stand on their hind legs to reach the leaves.
So this year all the small cherry trees are protected.

Anti-badger protection. It’s either that or the massacre.

The entire orchard is fenced and deer proof. But there’s no way to keep the badgers out, they always find a way to sneak in. Same with the fox or the weasel for that matter

Probably the badger trail, direct to the blueberry bushes.
The badgers’ favorite little corner.

Shrubs do very well with their nocturnal visits.
And no doubt the blueberries will be delicious.
