Description

Satsuma mandarins are the most consumed fruit by Japanese people. They have been grown commercially in the United States since the early 20th century.
This variety is a natural mutation, identified in Siverhill, Alabama, in a Satsumas Owari orchard, and selected by Walter T. Swingle in 1931 for its exceptional resistance to cold.
Harvesting is fairly early, from November or December, and mandarins can be ripe while the rind is still green. The fruit is juicy with few seeds and peels easily. They can be eaten in juice as early as October.
Once partially orange, the fruit is soft and sweet, with an intense tangerine fragrance.
The Silverhill tree is very vigorous, thornless, straight-growing and can bear a lot of fruit.
It is the most cold-resistant of all Satsuma varieties.
