Satsuma is the citrus fruit most commonly consumed by the Japanese, under the name Mikan or Unshu.
Satsuma is the name of the ancient Japanese province where the tree has been selected and cultivated since the 16th century.
One million saplings were exported by sea in the early 20th century for planting in Florida.
The Okitsu variety is earlier than the Owari: harvesting from November to December.
The fruit is juicy with few seeds and peels easily.
It can be eaten slightly green for those who prefer more acidity.
Once orange, the fruit is soft and sweet, with an intense tangerine fragrance.
The Okitsu tree is vigorous and highly productive, thornless and upright.
