The vegetable garden and the mountains in August

Lots to do at the moment, we’re chasing nature a bit, not much time to tell it. A few pictures anyway.

The pickle wall worked well, they didn’t burn. I even found snails sheltering underneath – last year they would have cooked.
Lots of production, but you have to pick them every day. We take them small and put them in vinegar.
The zucchini plants have become monstrous.
You need to find the zucchinis in the middle. Flowers are also very good to eat.
The tomatoes this year are very late (San Marzano variety, special for sauce). It’s probably my fault, I grew the plants in potting soil without fertilizer. As a result, the plants were very small in May and everything was delayed.
What’s more, I tried out some new varieties. This one is called Vesuvio.
Beans, on the other hand, never come off.
Just like Calabrian peppers. Another 2-3 weeks for them to start blushing.
For leeks this year, we tried a new technique: cover them with soil as they grow to get more white. It does work.
5 vegetables a day is possible in August.
Birds (especially jays) prey on apples that are just starting to ripen.
They eat a little, so the apples fall off, and they move on to the next one. A real mess.
To avoid this, we wrap everything up.
The squashes have overflowed and invaded the raspberry bushes.
Large format, and growing.
This one will be a funny shape.
In the shade, Schisandra (Schisandra cinensis) produced red bunches. We’ll soon be able to try it out for the first time.
The goumis (Elaeagnus multiflora) have grown in size and color.
Like every year, an incredible quantity of fruit.
Harvesting begins around August 15.
Another forgotten fruit: the dogwood (Cornus mas).
To be eaten very ripe, when they fall alone, otherwise very astringent. Not very good in fact, a bit of a poor man’s cherry.
A different kind of day: delivery by truck to a mountain refuge.
Cusiè at 1800 metres, the bottom of the Malvaglia valley. Below, the village of Dandrio, at an altitude of 1,200 metres.
The village of Madra, with the Val Malvaglia dam.
In principle, swimming is prohibited.
Cima Rossa, 3160 metres at the end of July, no snow at all.
