Satsuma mandarins are the most popular fruit eaten by the Japanese.
\nThey have been grown commercially in the United States since the early 20th century.
\nThis variety is a natural mutation, identified in Siverhill, Alabama, in an orchard of Owari Satsumas, and selected by Walter T. Swingle in 1931 for its exceptional resistance to cold.<\/p>\n
Harvesting is fairly early, from November or December, and mandarins can be ripe while the rind is still green.
\nThe fruit is juicy with few seeds and is easy to peel. They can be juiced as early as October.
\nHarvesting begins when the fruit is less hard and yields slightly to the fingers.
\nOnce partially orange, the fruit is soft and sweet, with an intense tangerine fragrance. <\/p>\n
The Silverhill tree is very vigorous, thornless, grows straight and can bear a lot of fruit.
\nIt is the most cold-resistant of all Satsuma varieties.<\/p>\n
