Satsuma mandarins are the most consumed fruit by Japanese people. They call them Mikan or Unshu.
Satsuma is the name of the ancient Japanese province where the tree has been selected and cultivated since the 16th century.
One million saplings were exported by sea in the early 20th century for planting in Florida.
The Owari variety is the most widespread in large plantations.
Harvesting is fairly early, from November or December, depending on the climate.
The fruit is juicy, with few seeds, and is easy to peel.
It is often ripe when the peel is still partially green.
Harvesting begins when the fruit is less hard and yields slightly to the fingers.
The fruit is then soft and sweet, with an intense mandarin aroma.
The Owari tree is very vigorous and productive, thornless and weeping.
