Description

Satsuma mandarins are the most consumed fruit by Japanese people. They call them Mikan or Unshu. Satsuma is the name of the ancient province of Japan where the tree has been selected and cultivated since the 16th century. One million saplings were exported by sea in the early 20th century for planting in Florida. The Owari variety is the most common in large plantations. Harvesting is fairly early, from November or December, depending on the climate. The fruit is juicy with few seeds and peels easily. They can be eaten still a little green for those who prefer more acidity. Once orange, the fruit is soft and sweet, with an intense scent of mandarin. The Owari tree is very vigorous and productive, thornless and weeping. References: https://idtools.org/tools/1076/index.cfm?packageID=1179&entityID=8664https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/CH116
