The Beni Madonna orange is renowned as the juiciest of all oranges, a recent Japanese creation that has been the pride of Ehime Prefecture since 2010.
Early-ripening (December) and very sweet, its gelatinous flesh melts in your mouth.
It is a Tangor, a multiple hybrid of mandarins and oranges, and the first of the “Jelly Citrus” varieties.
Its cultivation is now spreading in China and Korea, and hybridization efforts continue to produce new varieties with a melt-in-your-mouth texture.
This fruit has very thin skin and is difficult to peel; it is best eaten with a knife.
The tree is vigorous and productive, and very thorny.
The fruit is susceptible to damage from hail or heavy rain.
